From February 5th through 8th, I will be showing the movie “The City of Ember” to the fourth grade members of the Reading Tigers. “City of Ember” was directed by Gil Kenan and produced by Tom Hanks. It stars Saoirse Ronan, Harry Treadaway, Bill Murray, and Tim Robbins. Students will come directly from class at noon to the library with their lunch. Following each day’s viewing, I plan to have a brief discussion of the similarities and differences between the book and the movie. We’ll touch on themes of director vs. author vision, how actors bring a character to life, and how a director recreates the world of a science fiction book. This is a PG movie (for “mild peril and thematic elements”), so I will need a permission slip from each parent if you would like your fourth grade Reading Tiger to attend. Please fill out the permission slip attached below. I think children will have a wonderful time comparing the book to the movie.
Please send me an email, sally@james5.com, if you have any questions.
Permission Slip to View “The City of Ember”
I give permission for my son/daughter ______________________ to watch the movie “The City of Ember” in the library at South School during lunchtime of the week of February 5th through 8th. I understand that the movie is a PG movie and that the students will be comparing/contrasting the movie to the book they have already read.
